This is one of the twin lakes that occupy part of the Newberry Crater or caldera in Central Oregon which a is really nice place to visit and enjoy the outdoors. It is located in the Deschutes National Forest near the city of La Pine, OR. East Lake's water comes from snow melt, rain fall, and hot springs only. The average depth is 67 feet with 180 feet at the deepest point when full and covers 1,044 acres of adventures and activities for all ages.
East Lake is about 50 feet higher in elevation and is to the east of its twin, Paulina Lake about a 20 min drive. East Lake has two main camping grounds along the lake shore as well as East Lake Resort. The resort has cabins and a general store with minor necessities. The lake offers fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout. The lake is stocked with sockeye salmon and Atlantic salmon which requires a fishing licence. It is located 6 miles east of Cottage Grove a well know location for visitors. Dorena Dam was completed in 1949 and has been a nice place to enjoy the outdoors ever since. The Community claims this Oregon scenic byway attraction, two recreational lakes, the famous Row River biking-hiking trail, three golf courses and the best in watercraft recreation. Our beautiful community is located in western Oregon at the southern end of the Willamette Valley. Dorena Lake is just a 30 minute drive from Eugene and is easily accessible via Interstate five.
If you enjoy biking, hiking, camping, sightseeing, boating, water skiing, jet skis, swimming or just being outdoors in an unmatched setting come to Dorena Lake. The area is rich with history, art as well as classic American architecture with construction completion dates ranging from the late 1800's to the 1940's in a downtown area used as the setting for the famous "Animal House" parade scene. It is located in the high Cascade Range in the Deschutes National Forest perfect for outdoor enthusiest. In the early 19th century, the lakes in this area abounded with beavers and today you can enjoy jet skis, waverunners, wakeboarding, water skiing, and boat tours all offered by us. Cultus Lake lies at the base of the Cultus Mountain. The lake itself is natural and is 211 feet at its deepest point when full and about two miles long.
Two species of fish inhabit the lake for those who plan on fishing: rainbow trout and mackinaw usually caught with flatfish or anything shiny like a minnow. The lake also has a creek running into it inhabited by young fish and minnows, a popular fly fishing spot. The lake has a twin lake called Little Cultus Lake and the lakes are divided by the mountain. The area around Cultus Lake is known for its old growth large Ponderosa Pine, Douglas-fir and western White Pine, sometimes rising to 120 feet tall which makes for great exploring and hiking activities.
